here it is...
my least favorite verse in the Bible.
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29
Yes, I said least favorite. Because it's so so so so so hard for me to obey this one! It just doesn't seem right. Not saying anything that isn't helpful? But what about...? And then there are those times I need to vent...
It's so easy to just ramble off my opinions on any given issue. Its easy to notice and talk about all the ways people are different than me. It's so easy to defend myself or make someone else look bad to make me look better. OH, how i wish this were not so, but God is and will continue to teach me these lessons until the day I die. Anyway... this week I was reading Proverbs chapter 4 about guarding our hearts...and one of the ways we can do that (protecting what goes in our hearts or protecting where our heart takes us) is to watch our mouth.
So in application, I decided to do a 30 day fast from unwholesome talk. If you have followed my blog for long you probably remember my lenten fast from spending money. I was so excited how that God gave me the strength to do that (except for that one time the Wendy's billboard got me and then that Carmel Apple Spice drink from Starbucks). I was so encouraged about being able (with the help of God) to do something I thought I couldn't do, that now I have confidence that this endeavor will be fruitful as well. MY hope is that I will get in a habit of watching what i say more closely and allowing Ephesians 4:29 to be my filter on my mouth. Hopefully after 30 days this will be a new habit. I know alot of this habit will be filtering what I let go into my heart since from the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
If I could just run this verse through my head before speaking...then I am sure my mouth and my words will be more wholesome...
anyway...here's to another 30days. ...anyone want to join me?
